HQA Visa IFICI Tax: Who Actually Qualifies

HQA visa IFICI tax benefits are often promised in marketing, but the permit does not give them to you. IFICI, sometimes called "NHR 2.0", taxes eligible Portuguese work income at 20% for 10 years and exempts most foreign income. You qualify only if your role and your employer fit one of the eligible categories, and you must register on time.

How this works with an HQA package

An HQA investment package can put you in a position to qualify, for example through a role in a certified startup or certified research work. Whether it does depends on:

  • whether the company holds the right certification
  • what your role is and how you are paid
  • whether you meet the education and experience rules

Ask your provider in writing which IFICI category they expect you to use, and have a tax adviser confirm it before you move.

Old NHR is closed

The old non-habitual resident regime (NHR) closed to new applicants from 1 January 2024. People already registered keep it for their remaining years. IFICI is narrower and tied to specific roles.
